SPEILBERG TALES BY MOONLIGHT

by Oyakhire Russel

She was pointing at the floor with a frown across her face. She looked so furious this time that I thought she would pour the bowl of hot water in her right hand on me but she didn’t. She put down the bowl and picked me up from the mess I had made by my ear ‘This child why? Why? Look at what you have done every time you cause trouble for me and your father…you are my only child but you cause us more trouble than 10 children put together.’ She pulls open the cupboard and I immediately knew what she was reaching for. I won’t allow her flog me this time I am a big boy now at age 15 I looked quite big for my age, which is why I could easily take Ore’s groundnut and Banana that his mother packs for him as lunch every Thursday for school and he dare not report me to Principal Ibekwe.

Not thinking, I held mama’s hands and forced my ear out of it, the surprise in her eyes was evident ‘Francis Ezeama, you dare raise your and against your mother!’ she retrieves the stick from the cupboard, adjusts her wrapper and faces me with a resolve in her face that I had seem many times before…she was determined to beat the devil out of me, at least that was her own point of view. I am a big boy now I wouldn’t take that and if she tries to tell daddy I will run away. She swings the stick in all directions at me At first I tried to block but suddenly the rage welled up within me like before and I swear I didn’t know when I seized the stick from my mother’s hand and retaliated by wiping her with it. Mid-way my wiping fiasco did I come to my senses. ‘I am finished when papa realises what I had done, this by far exceeds all the terrible things I had done.'

Mama is the corner of the room covering her face, she doesn’t fight back and for a minute I catch a glimpse of her eyes, she was afraid of me; afraid of her own son. That look cut me like a knife and I burst out of the house through the back door in the kitchen. I ran through the town, and ran right into the forest; I didn’t look up or care where I was going, all i wanted to do was to get away from the haunting look I saw in my mother’s eyes.

I didn’t see it coming, but in a flash I ran into something fury and big and we tumbled down into a burrow deep within the forest ground, it was dark and murky and suddenly all the tales of the terrible spirits and animals that lurked within the forest played in my mind. Standing to my feet I looked around, 'what had hit me like that?' Before me lay a large beast, it had hit the ground hard and passed out whilst I had been fortunate to have fallen on-top its fury body which cushioned my fall else I would have been dead. But looking at the creature it was nothing like I had ever seen, it had horns like a ram with the head of an Ox but wasn’t bent on all fours but stretched out like the form of a man. I looked at it closely as it breathed heavily, and a scream escaped my breath. Suddenly its eyes opened and it jumped and with a mighty growl it snarled at me, and fume burst out from its mouth and nostrils.

I nearly fainted and looking at it, it stood over me like a giant even though I am pretty tall for my age at 6.1 feet.

I screamed with all my strength and it reeled back in fear, it looked like it was confused/afraid but I wasn’t sure. I mean this is a beast, how could it be afraid of a mere human like me. But I was wrong as a dark shadow crept up behind me and I knew that I wasn’t alone, was there someone or something much more terrible?

My Book of the Month: Yellow-Yellow by Kaine Agary

Yellow-Yellow is a Niger Delta Story through the eyes of Zilayefa aka Laye who is popularly called Yellow Yellow because of her fair complexion. She is so heavily guarded by her mother who is her only parent since her father had never been a part of her life. He disappeared immediately after he had impregnated Laye’s mother many years ago when they had had a fling in Port Harcourt.

Laye’s yearning to break out from her village and the choking control of her mother leads her to seek out a saviour. Someone who would rescue her out of the village into one of the big cities and for a moment hope seemed in sight when Sergio, the white man and friend of Tarilabo, son of the late Chief Semoke of her village took interest in her at the funeral of Chief Semoke. The relationship only lasted a few days, but that encounter with the white man in his late forties saw Laye showing deep understanding of her feline power despite her young age, in the way she flirted with Sergio.

After much struggle she finally convinces her mother to let her go and with the help of Pastor Ikechukwu she goes to Port Harcourt. In Port Harcourt, Laye, experiences comfort, love and support from Sisi, Lolo, Damiete and many others but her desire for masculine companionship makes her fall for an older man: 60 year old Admiral.

The story takes different twist and turns and seventeen year old Laye, fights with the turmoil within her because of her desire for fatherly affection, the turmoil in her country with all the poverty, fuel scarcity and pain even though she is in the midst of comfort in the home of Sisi and the company of Lolo.

This 179 page narrative is a must read because of the ease with which the author, reveals Nigeria with all its problems and yet with a hope that lie within.

BEAUTY AND ASHES PART 4 (The Final Episode)

Recap from Last Episode
"She folds her arms around him and lets her lips rest on his lips as she unbuttons his shirt…Ben feels the adrenaline rush through his brain, he had never felt this way with any woman. But he his eyes becomes heavy, he can’t move his hands and suddenly his feet can’t hold him up and he crashes down to the ground.

Three men stand across the table a few feet away from the freezer in the dining room. Mr Ben’s Goons interrogate the man...

...BANG, BANG” Two gunshots rent the air, “Jesus” She muffles under her breath…she lifts up the lid and sees the two men hunched over Tayo. He is on his knees pleading, as the gunshots had been directed at his legs...
For the first time she noticed. Tayo was beautiful..."

CONTINUATION...

" ...why had she been so blind…so angry. Life rocks you like the ocean and sometimes the storm is so crazy that you don’t think. When everything has calmed you ask yourself “what the HECK was I thinking!” “What the what? Okay what’s going on?” Tayo prods, “Sorry don’t mind me I was just thinking.” Nneka replies. She rests her hands on he’s and for a minute their eyes lock. It seemed like forever but Nneka eventually tears her gaze away from him.

Almost immediately in a flash, the door explodes off its hinges and the two men who left earlier march inside followed by Mr Ben. “So we meet again. Mystery Lady” A demented smile etches across Mr Ben’s face.

Tayo tries to get up but immediately the two men pounce on him, he is restrained to floor. “B$%$@#@” Mr Ben swings his hand across Nneka’s cheek. She crashes into the television stand in the room. As she struggles up from the ground Mr Ben Kicks her in the belly. “Let’s finish what we started…” He loosens his belt and twists her arm, making her to face him. She grabs a shard of glass and scratches Mr Ben’s hands “Arrrrgh…you B#%^%%$” Immediately, Tayo taking advantage of the opportunity breaks free from the Men’s grip. He grabs the gun out of their loose side strap and pulls the trigger.

Gunshots rent the air, and everything goes black and white…glass and debris fly across the room. The sounds are deafening. Moments later she opens her eyes, but can’t see clearly…Tayo leans over her with blood smeared over his shirt and face. “Are you alright? Nneka speak to me” Tayo taps her face.

She tries to sit up but feels a sharp pain in her side, she had been shot! “Take it easy, try not to speak, I’ll get you to a hospi…”, “BANG!!!” Tayo’s blood splatters over her shirt.

Mr Ben staggers over her with a gun in his hands “You think you can bring me down that easy…” Mr Ben spits. Tayo falls into her hands and she feels the gun he held press onto her thigh, she clenches the gun.

“Well, time to join your boyfriend”, Mr Ben lifts up his gun but she stretches out her hand with the gun and pulls the trigger immediately “BANG!” He’s eyes are wide open, bewildered as he feels the blood trickle down his body, he falls to the ground and he is gone. She reaches for his face, Tayo was barely breathing…”Tayo!” She cries. “Start over again…” Tayo coughs the words, “it’s over now I am sorry for causing you so much pain…please, take this!” He presses a key into her hands. “Go to Pastor, he will explain everything…I love you.” The words escape his mouth as he breathes his last. The world seemed to spin as she holds Tayo in her arms. “What manner of love is this…I hurt him and still he died for me…”
