“He loves me, he loves me not; (she smiles) He loves me” this is Mary’s final conclusion, she decides to allow Tobore the gorgeous guy in her after school philanthropic project into her heart, after all the signs are there although he hasn’t made any move officially. Yeah, it’s been a series of silent messages in the short random gazes and the soft smile etched across his lips when ever she has to address the group to which she is its acting coordinator and he, her faithful financial secretary. Her heart swells as she gets into her milk dress with purple roses printed across its cotton terrain clad with her mini jacket and ebony beaded accessories combination.
Amidst the tinkling of glasses under the miniature version of the towering palm tree illuminated by the soft yellow light which silently announced the dawning of the day, all though its usefulness still remained minimal; Tobore opens up about his life, without any inhibitions and Mary never felt closer as she can smell the musk blend of Calvin Klein bonding with his very aura. Her eyes rove over his beautiful face to rest upon the necklace on his chest; it was a metallic branded piece, with the inscription: TOBInNESI. This captured her attention and her gaze is held as she tries to figure it out but Tobore notices her silence and tracing her eyes he sees the culprit of her distraction “You like it” Tobore cuts into her thoughts, “oooh sorry I was distracted by its inscription” Mary retorts with a puppy smile spread across her face. “Well it was a gift from a special person” Tobore fills in “a special person?” Mary inquires with a lingering smirk “it’s a gift from my girl, a mix of my name and hers” replies Tobore. Mary’s is silent and all of a sudden the beach seemed crammed up and suffocating for this duo. “I have a girl friend” he infers succinctly.
“Tori” like my “naija” brothers would say long but I am not trying to start another Nollywood mania with my elaborate “yans” I have an eagle perspective on my tale; seeing beyond the ordinary interpretation of boy meet girl, I see another confused congregation. There exist two sects of people that amaze me and in all the twenty something years of my young life I have come to recognize its presence and still yet to understand it. My eagles view: I LOVE HIM, HE LOVES ME NOT BUT LOVES ANOTHER.
The human desires companionship, either the bond of a mother with her child, a boy with his puppy or even a fashionista with her wardrobe (na lie? You know yourself …) but many times we seek companionship that isn’t returned. It hurts, I know, I have been there my self-which is a little embarrassing to admit but many tales abound as I have seen people lie about their status just to be apart of a click and yet never really be accepted, for those of us who aren’t married we have heard tales or seen the life’s of some couples were a particular partner is committed to making the relationship work: taking all the blame and always ready to forgive whilst the other is unperturbed about the feelings of his/her companion.
I wonder why we seem to desire those things that don’t desire us, we sometimes go to the extreme and deny our identity , our background in exchange for another’s. My perception doesn’t come with a judgmental undertone but is more of a puzzled one. There is a lot to fear in this world and I do see the need for someone to comfort you, loving you even when your mascara is over run with tears and when you cant fit into those size 6 jeans but still the truth must be told, we should seek acceptance in a place of truth and simplicity; take it from a young man with an eagles perspective, in receiving love it is best to go to the source- from the creation and deeper still from GOD.
